netpbm advanced branch has gained an interactive configure script which propts the user during casting. For workaround note comments in the configure script:

# This program is only a convenience.  It is supported to create 
# config.mk any way you want.  In fact, an easy way is to copy
# config.mk.in and follow the instructions in the comments therein
# to uncomment certain lines and make other changes.

Also note that Makefile.common is now config.mk[.in]

fixed in f2e7e2b6e7419265355638f82f1a78eade0159e5
