Bugzilla – Bug 8205
irc.sourcemage.org
Last modified: 2008-07-05 17:05:57 UTC
Ruskie had an idea for an irc.cgi interface on our site that would allow people to jump on irc from our site for smgl tech-support. I suggest we limit it to a few channels like #smgl-support or something (but not #sourcemage).
I'd also prefer we not use Java (since it's not open source, at least not yet ;)). Here're two PHP-based ones: http://sourceforge.net/projects/phpirc http://dev22.dangerous-minds.net/
From my experience, this kind of feature has never been great. The problem is, regardless whether someone is presented with and irc interface in a web browser, or in an irc client, if they don't understand IRC, the web interface isn't much help. It's still IRC. If someone doesn't understand IRC, then they're also very likely to not know that "the little chat thing" goes away when they press the back or forward buttons in their browser as well. I'm really not sure what sort of benefit the web irc interface would be to anyone.
I think we'd try and keep it as simple as possible and have it join only one channel (#sourcemage-newbies) with no options to do anything else. I don't know anyone who'd use this feature either, but apparently some think it'd be handy. I'd prefer the user just run their own IRC client or use the forums or mailing list.
(Testing the new Take bug feature) Is this something that is still wanted?
As there has been no response in some time, and it appears to not be a highly desired feature, I'm closing this.
Mass closing of junk.
